From childhood he was engaged in art and as a child he performed in productions on the theater stage and on the radio. He studied accounting at a commercial school, combining studies with classes at the municipal school of dramatic art. He later graduated from the University of Havana with a diploma in Spanish and Literature. [2] He played in the troupes of several theaters, from 1962 to 1969 he was a screenwriter of radio and television programs, and also wrote adapted scripts for theatrical productions based on classical works of world literature. He wrote his first play in 1964, in 1968 he first appeared as a director. He wrote music for all his plays on his own. He died of a heart attack in his home in Havana.
During his life, he held many administrative posts in Cuban cultural institutions, was a member of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (including working for three years as vice president of the association of artists under him). He was awarded many national and departmental awards and prizes, including in 1996, winner of the Omar Valdes Prize for his outstanding contribution to the development of Cuban culture [3] and in 2004, winner of the National Theater Prize [4] .
Among the most famous plays of his authorship are "With a sweet paradise and in a hut" (also known as "Onions and Beans"; "Contigo pan y cebolla", 1962), "Skinny Prize" ("El premio flaco", 1966; was translated into many languages of the world and has been staged repeatedly abroad, including in the USSR and Bulgaria), “The Seven Deadly Sins” (Los 7 pecados capitales, 1968; was not only an author, but also a director at the National Theater of Havana) . One of his most famous productions is The Decameron (1969) based on the work of the same name by Giovanni Boccaccio . Among his performances were also staged based on the works of Russian writers: Pushkin, Gogol, Chekhov.
