Biography

Andrei Madekin was born on March 30, 1963 in Moscow. On the maternal side, belongs to the famous genera of textile entrepreneurs of the Ivanovo region of the 19th century, Derbenev [1] and Morokin [2] .

He studied at the Children's Art School. V. A. Serova and the Moscow Technological Institute (now the Russian State University of Tourism and Service) at the Department of Decorative and Applied Arts, specializing in "Tapestry and Fabric Painting Artist" from 1980 to 1985. In 1990 he joined the Moscow Union of Artists [3] . Since 2003, he has been teaching drawing and painting at the PGI Co-Action, located in Moscow.

Creativity

Tapestries

The first tapestry was woven by the artist in 1983, back in his student years. The early large works that appeared at exhibitions in the 1980s were distinguished by monumentality and high quality (“Stranger”. 1987, “Rock”. 1988, “Suprematism or Dedication to Malevich. 1988”).

One of the areas in which the artist’s work has been developing since 1989 is the tapestries on biblical subjects and themes of ancient mythology (“Entry into Jerusalem.” 1989, “Marriage in Cana of Galilee.” 1989, “The Last Supper.” 1990, “Bathsheba ". 1991," Oedipus and the Sphinx ".1992," The Abduction of Europe. "1993," The Way of the Magi. "2009," Escape to Egypt. "2011," Suppress the storm. "2016, etc.). Another line is the creation of tapestries designed for specific public and residential interiors (“Tsarist hunting trip” and “Reception of foreign ambassadors”. 2004, “Music”. 1999, “Zebras”. 2000, etc.). In such works, the master takes into account the purpose and style of decoration of the room. Depending on the tasks set, the artist can change his bright stylized style to a realistic one. A number of expressive woven decorative landscapes and still lifes adorn private interiors. Creating sketches for tapestries, Andrei Madekin himself weaves them on his improved machine. By 2016, the master created more than 80 tapestries, of which more than half have dimensions of more than 3 m². The artist’s tapestries are characterized by a balance of expressive details and generalization of the composition as a whole. The ability to convey typical national and individual character traits by weaving techniques is characteristic. In the images of people and animals, their characters, feelings and moods are clearly read. The laconicism of the interpretation of the figures of heroes and the landscape or interior surrounding them becomes extreme in the works of the 1990s: Bathsheba, Hermes, the Babylonian Harlot and others.

Taking the plots of the Old and New Testaments as a basis, the master moves away from their canonical development, sometimes leading to a powerful grotesque. Narrative and at the same time decorative tapestries are always filled with deep content and symbolism. Associativity, the ability to see in their own way eternal themes and plots makes the work of Andrei Madekin a significant, original and relevant phenomenon of our time.
