McKim, Charles

His father, James Miller McKim (1810–1874), originally a Presbyterian pastor, was a well-known abolitionist and one of the founders (in 1865) of the New York Nation . Charles was educated at Harvard (1866-1867) and then in Paris at the School of Fine Arts (1867-1870). In 1872 he became an architect in New York, starting work at Richardson's firm; in 1877 began to collaborate with William Rutherford Mead. The company in 1879 was named McKim, Mead & White , after Stephen White became their partner. McCim became one of the founders of the American Academy in Rome, was awarded a gold medal at the Paris Exhibition in 1900, and in 1903 received the Royal Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects for his services to the development of architecture. In 1907 he became an academician of the National Academy of Design.

Of the buildings designed by McKim, the most famous university club in New York (1899), one of the Columbia University campuses, extensions to the White House (1906), as well as the Boston Public Library (1887).
