Katarina (Moon Crater)

Katarina crater ( lat. Catharina ) - a large ancient impact crater in the mainland southeastern region of the visible side of the moon . The name was given in honor of the Greek theologian and philosopher St. Catherine of Alexandria (287 AD - 305 AD) and approved by the International Astronomical Union in 1935. The formation of the crater dates back to the nectar period [1] .

Crater Description

The immediate neighbors of the crater are the Tacitus crater in the west-north-west; Kirill crater in the north; Beaumont Crater in the east; Polybius crater in the south-south-east and Farma crater in the south-south-west. To the west of the Katarina crater is a chain of Abu l-Fida craters , in the northeast of the Nectar Sea , in the south, Altai ledge [2] . Selenographic coordinates of the center of the crater , diameter 98.8 km [3] , depth 3.13 km [4] .

The crater has a polygonal shape, is slightly elongated in the north-south direction and is significantly destroyed over a long time of its existence. The shaft is flattened and low, reaches a maximum height in the northeastern part, and is blocked by many craters of various sizes. The northern part of the crater bowl and its shaft is blocked by the satellite crater Katarina P (see below). The inner slope of the shaft is faint, most pronounced in the western part. The shaft height above the surrounding area reaches 1510 m [1] , the volume of the crater is about 10 860 km 3 [1] . The bottom of the bowl is relatively flat, but crossed, the southern part of the bowl is covered by rocks ejected during the formation of neighboring craters and marked by the satellite crater Katarina S. In the central part of the bowl there is an annular ridge, which is the southern part of the shaft of the satellite crater Katarina P. This ridge is combined with a low central peak of height 800 m [5] .
