Biography
Fred Bertelman was born in Duisburg in 1925. From the age of 9 he sang in the choir of the St. Lawrence Church in Nuremberg , later he studied playing the cello , trumpet, and guitar. He improved his vocal skills at the Nuremberg Opera House, where he performed the parts of dramatic baritone . During World War II, he fought on the western front as part of the Wehrmacht troops, was captured and sent to forced labor in Alabama , USA in 1944, where he first heard the swing . After returning to Germany in 1946, he founded his own group and often performed in clubs for US troops. In 1950, Bertelman made a tour to Sweden with actress and singer Tsar Leander , performing mostly popular music. In 1952, he began working on the nascent Hamburg television. As an actor in the 1950s and 1960s, he played in cinema and theater.
His most popular song dates back to 1957 - “The Funny Tramp” or “The Laughing Tramp” [1] ( German: Der Lachende Vagabund , a cover version of Jim Low’s song), which made him rich and famous [2] . To date, more than 3.5 million records have been published recording this song [3] (according to some sources, more than 5 million [4] ). Other famous hits include “Night at Montana,” “Two Guitars by the Sea,” “Goodbye, Rome,” and others. With great success, Fred Bertelman performed the songs of Frank Sinatra in German. Three times - in 1956, 1961 and 1964 he took part in the national selection contest for Eurovision , but took only 2, 15 and 11 places respectively [3] .
Since 1966, married to television presenter and actress Ruth Kapelshberger.
Since the end of 2013, Fred Bertelman had severe pneumonia . He died on January 22, 2014 in the town of Berg, Upper Bavaria.
