My neighbor seki

My Neighbor Seki ( と な り の 関 く ん Tonari no Seki-kun ) is a Japanese manga whose author and illustrator is Takuma Morishige. The plot tells the story of a girl named Rumi Yokoi, who is trying to attract attention in the classroom and her classmate named Toshihaki Seki, who each time begins to get seriously involved in the next game and quickly forgets about it. The manga was originally released in one chapter in 2010 and began its regular release from the November edition of Comic Flapper in 2010. Manga is also published in the United States [1] . Based on the manga, Shin-Ei Animation released OVA series along with a limited edition of the fifth volume of the manga on January 4, 2014. From January to May 2014, an anime series was released and includes 21 episodes.

Characters

Rumi Yokoi ( 横 井 る み Yokoi Rumi ) is the main character of the story and acts as a storyteller. She is constantly trying to attract attention in the classroom, but each time she is distracted by the tricks of her schoolmate named Seki. She either tries to prevent Seki from getting into a new hobby by sabotaging, or joins his game herself, but even in this situation, she creates new problems for Seki.

Seiyu : Kana Hanazawa [2]

Toshinari Seki ( 関 俊 成 Seki Toshinari ) is a classmate of Rumi, a quiet and mysterious teenager who is only involved in playing various board games on his desk or making something. Usually, a curious Rumi intervenes in his affairs, which often creates problems for Seki. If Seki is distracted, then he will no longer be able to concentrate on the object of hobby. Then, in a fit of anger, Seki can even break her toys. He has no friends, and among other classmates does not show any oddities.

Seiyu: Hiro Shimono [2]

Sakurako Goto ( 後 藤 桜 子 Goto: Sakurako ) is a classmate of Rumi and Seki, sitting next to them. Later becomes a friend of Rumi. She also believes that Rumi and Seki are in love with each other.

Tomoka Hashino ( 橋 野 友 香 Hashino Tomoka ) , a classmate of Rumi and Seki, wears glasses.

Akiyasu Uzawa ( 宇 沢 明康 Uzawa Akiyasu ) is a classmate of Rumi and Seki who always gets bored and often interferes with Seki's hobbies.

Seiyu: Minoru Shiraishi [2]

Takahiro Maeda ( 前 田 高 広 Maeda Takahiro ) is Seki's classmate who sits right in front of him. Due to its impressive size, it blocks Seki, which is why teachers never notice what Seki does.

Manga

The author and illustrator of the manga is Takuma Moritsuge, the manga was originally released as a one-shot in August 2010 by Media Factory in the magazine Comic Flapper and in November of that year began its permanent release. The first tankobon was released on April 23, 2011 [3] , six volumes were released on July 23, 2014 [4] [5] . The manga was licensed for release in the United States [6] under the name My Neighbor Seki . The manga issue began in January 2015, each volume is released with an interval of 2-3 months [1] .

Anime

The anime series consisting of 21 episodes was released by Shin-Ei Animation, directed by Yuji Muto. The series was broadcast in Japan from January 5 to May 25, 2014, and was also officially released on the American Crunchyroll website called Tonari no Seki-kun: The Master of Killing Time. Along with the fifth volume of the manga, a limited edition was released, which included a DVD edition with the first two OVA series [5] [14] . The series was also released on DVD in two parts on May 28, 2014, a bonus series [15] [16] was available in each disc. The opening song for the anime “Meiwaku Spectacle” ( Japanese 迷惑 ス ペ ク タ ク ル Meiwaku Supekutakuru ) is performed by Kana Hanazawa , and the ending “Set Them Free” is played by Akira Jimbo [14] . Akifumi Tada composed the music for the anime.

Criticism and Popularity

As of January 2014, over two million copies of manga were sold in Japan [13] . Manga was also nominated for the Taisho Manga Award ( Japanese マ ン ガ 大 賞 ) in 2012 [17] .

Karen Mead, a critic of Japanator, appreciated the work of the protagonist, who is enthusiastically engaged in his own affairs, but the other characters turned out to be not so interesting. She also noted that the series are too long, which creates a tense atmosphere, as the plot can easily fit in 3-4 minutes [18] . Richard Eisenbase, a critic at Kotaku, called the anime simple but very entertaining [19] .
