Kandel, Alexander Efimovich

Biography

Born February 3, 1935 in Nizhny Tagil in the family of a hereditary mining engineer from Russified Germans.

As a child, he read a lot and was fond of sports - football, volleyball, cycling, aircraft modeling.

In 1952, Alexander Kandel graduated from high school and entered the Sverdlovsk Mining Institute. V.V. Vakhrusheva. In 1954, he began to play basketball, almost immediately became a player in the starting five of Uralmash, playing in the major league.

In 1955, A. Kandel was first called up to the USSR national team, for which he played for many years, and in 1961 became the European champion. A. Kandel participated in five Spartakiads of the peoples of the USSR (for the sixth he was a coach of the RSFSR team), 17 times became the champion of the RSFSR.

In 1957 he graduated from the institute with a degree in mining electrical engineer and began to work as an engineer in a thermal workshop at the Ural Heavy Engineering Plant (until 1969).

The title "Master of Sports of the USSR" was awarded in 1957. The title "Honorary Master of Sports of the USSR" was awarded in 1964.

He played for the teams Trud (Sverdlovsk) (1958–1959), Uralmashzavod (Sverdlovsk) (1960–1961), and Uralmash (Sverdlovsk) (1962–1976).

Playing coach, coach (1969-1973), senior coach of the male BC Uralmash (1973-1976) - champion of the RSFSR (1971); Coach of the female BC Uralmash (1991-1996) - bronze medalist of the Super League of the Russian Championship (1994, 1996).

Coach of the female BC Uralmash (1993-2000), silver medalist of the championships of Russia (1997, 1999), bronze medalist of the championships of Russia (1994, 1996, 1998).

Playing coach of the RSFSR national team (1969), senior coach of the RSFSR national team (1970-1976).

He also worked as a head coach of the Youth Sports School at the Uralmash sports club.

Member of the Executive Committee of the Russian Federation of Basketball, Vice President in 1998-2002. At the same time, he played in veteran competitions - European champion among veterans (2000, 2002, 2004), silver medalist at the World Basketball Championship among veterans (2001).

He died on May 10, 2005. He was buried in the Northern cemetery of Yekaterinburg .

He was awarded the Badge of Merit for the city of Yekaterinburg.

In 2006, according to the results of an all-Russian journalistic survey, the name of center Aleksandr Kandel was included in the second symbolic basketball five of the best Russian players of the twentieth century - together with defenders S. Yeremin and I. Edeshko and forwards Yu. Korneev and A. Zharmukhamedov [1] .

In 2008, a memorial plaque was installed on the house where A.E. Kandel lived (Kultury Boulevard, 5). In September 2011, the first basketball school for children and youth named after A. E. Kandel was opened [2] .
