Biography
He was born in 1914 in Kiev , in the family of a teacher.
In 1934-1938, he worked as a teacher at the Karachizh-Krylovsky Forest College in the Bryansk Region , combining work with his studies at the Bryansk State Technical University , which he graduated with honors in 1938 .
Later in 1938-1942 he served in the Soviet army .
In the period 1940-1941 and 1943-1944 he held the position of senior engineer for the protection of forests of the Main Forest Protection Agency of the USSR SNK .
In 1944-1947 he worked as a junior research fellow at VNIILH (now VNIILM ), in 1947-1950 he worked as an assistant professor at the Belarusian LTI in Minsk , giving courses on forest entomology and phytopathology there and at Belarusian State University .
In 1947 he defended his thesis. He organized a forest protection laboratory at the Forest Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR. He was a member of the Polesskaya complex expedition (1948-1949).
In 1950 he went to work at the Moscow Forestry Institute . In 1952, he organized and headed the Department of Forest Protection in it (later the Department of Ecology and Forest Protection), remaining at this post for the rest of his life.
In 1962 he defended his doctoral dissertation.
In 1967, at the department on the basis of the specialty "Forestry and Gardening", on his initiative, a new specialty was allocated - "Forest Protection". For her, Vorontsov developed a curriculum and for the first time gave courses in forest protection technology and biological forest protection. The first graduation of specialists in this specialty took place in 1970.
He died on September 2, 1988 in Moscow .
Scientific activity
Vorontsov conducted research and established the basic laws of the formation and development of biocenotic complexes of dendrophilic insects in the conditions of field protection and reclamation plantings, in natural taiga forests. Vorontsov studied the ecology of the most important insect pests of the forest, developed and introduced for the first time the course “Environmental Protection” in the curricula of forestry universities.
During the period of his scientific and pedagogical activity, he published 18 textbooks, manuals and monographs, more than 250 articles. Among them are “Biological Foundations of Forest Protection” (1960, 1963), “Forest Pathology” (1978), “Biological Forest Protection” (1984), and a number of other popular science books. Books and articles for his authorship were published in Australia , England , Bulgaria , East Germany, Romania , Poland , Japan .
The textbook for his authorship "Forest Entomology" during his life has survived four editions (in 1962, 1967, 1975, 1982), after his death was reprinted in 1992 . In addition to the textbook, Vorontsov, co-authored with E. G. Mozolevskaya, created and published the “Workshop on Forest Entomology” (1973, 1976, 1978), later published in an updated version in 1991. Another textbook co-authored with E. G. Mozolevskaya and E. S. Sokolova, “Forest Protection Technology”, was published in 1991 according to a plan he developed. One of the main books of his authorship was “Biological Foundations of Forest Protection” (1960, 1963), translated and published in Japanese in 1972 .
A major contribution to population ecology is the bioclimatic and synoptic theory of insect population dynamics developed by Vorontsov.
Vorontsov created the scientific school of forest entomology and forest protection, well-known in the USSR and abroad.
