History
In Estonia , they got acquainted with volleyball in 1919 , when sports games were included in the program of educational institutions in Tallinn . A year later, a sports festival was organized in the city center, part of which was a volleyball tournament with the participation of men's teams in several cities of the country. In 1922, the Estonian Sports Games Union was organized, and three years later he held the first national championship among men and women . In the 1930s, Estonian teams regularly participated in various international matches.
In 1940, Estonia became part of the Soviet Union and, starting in 1946, the best women's team of the Estonian SSR - Tallinn Kalev - was regularly among the participants in the USSR championships , but at best it took places in the middle of the tournament table, and after its formation in 1966 the structure of the all-Union championships of the two divisions, “Kalev” has never been able to enter the leading of them. The highest achievement of the female team of the Estonian SSR in the volleyball tournaments of the Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR was the 6th place occupied by it in 1959 and 1963 . As part of the USSR national team, Aino Humerind , the only representative of Estonia who was part of the main team of the Soviet Union, became the silver medalist of the 1955 European Championship .
After Estonia gained independence, the country's volleyball federation joined the FIVB and the EKV in 1992 . In the same year, the Estonian women's team debuted in official international competitions. In October and November, Estonians held two butt matches with the Belarus national team in the preliminary round of the European Championship qualifying tournament , but both times lost with a score of 0: 3 and did not reach the group stage of qualification. After that, until 2008, the Estonian team did not participate in official tournaments, limiting itself only to friendly matches.
In 2008 , after a 16-year hiatus, Estonian volleyball players entered the qualifying tournament of the European continental championship , but in their qualification group they lost 6 matches out of six to their rivals from the national teams of Bulgaria , Croatia and Finland , having failed to take even a single set. The following year, one of the group tournaments of the starting round for the World Cup was held in Tallinn , but for the hostesses of the field at this stage the selection was completed due to the only defeat from the Moldavian team 2: 3.
In 2013, at the first stage of qualifying for the world championship, Estonians defeated the national teams of Latvia , Lithuania and Iceland and reached the final round of the qualifying tournament, but they could not oppose anything to the national teams of Azerbaijan , Serbia and Israel , losing each of them with the same score 0: 3 .
In the qualifying tournament of the European Championship 2015, the Estonian team successfully overcame the first group stage, but in the second, as well as 6 years earlier, it turned out to be an outsider, having failed to win in its group even once in six matches held. In the same way, the Estonian team also qualified for Euro 2017 , however, having managed to win one victory at the 2nd stage of the selection - over the national team of Finland 3: 2.
In January 2019, the Estonian national team achieved a historic achievement for the country's women's volleyball, qualifying for the first time in the European Championship [3] . The Estonian volleyball players achieved this success, unexpectedly for many taking 1st place in their qualifying group, ahead of the teams in Finland , the Czech Republic and Sweden .
Nowadays, volleyball is traditionally inferior to basketball , football and ice hockey in terms of popularity in the country of game sports.
