Biography
Comes from German Livonian nobles. Ancestors moved to the Baltic States from Scotland in 1630 and were officers of the Kingdom of Sweden. Father - Reinhold Friedrich von Löwis ( German: Reinhold Friedrich von Löwis ), major general of the Russian army, mother Dorothea Elizabeth (1744-1799), nee Clapier.
He began active service as lieutenant of the Revel infantry regiment in 1782; in 1783 he was promoted to lieutenant, and in 1786 he transferred to the Narva Infantry Regiment and, commanding a company in it, took part in the war with Sweden in 1788–90, where he performed a number of feats. In the battle of Friedrichsham, an attack on the right wing of the Swedes, he contributed to their defeat; under strong enemy fire, destroyed the bridge on the Kumen River (rank of captain); an attack at night captured with his company and 160 hunters of other regiments the Swedish battery (rank of second major); with 2 companies he crossed the loose ice of Lake Saimaa; stormed the fortified village of Kumbarando, then attacked the enemy battery and captured 1 gun and 30 lower ranks (the rank of prime minister).
Appointed by the commander of one of the grenadier battalions in the army, General Krechetnikov, Leviz took part in the war with Poland in 1791 and stood out as a dashing partisan. Having formed a flying detachment of 2 grenadier companies, 60 rangers, a squadron of dragoons, a squadron of hussars and hundreds of Cossacks, he seized Vilna with daring swoop and then participated in the defeat of the Confederates near metro Granno.
