Before their first joint performance at the King Of Hearts Miami club, Moore sang in his father's Baptist choir and performed with gospel music band The Melonaires, and Prater was a member of the gospel music band The Sensational Hummingbirds. The owner of the club "King Of Heart" John Lomelo became the manager of the duet and helped them to conclude a contract with the New York record label Foulette Records. In the period 1962-1964, the musicians recorded five singles and one album, which was produced by veteran rhythm and blues Henry Glover . These works were not particularly successful, however, after signing a contract with the label Atlantic Records, their rating increased significantly (for political reasons, their records were included on the Memphis label Stax Records , which was then part of the concern Atlantic Records). In the recordings they were helped by a band from Memphis, and the most popular songs they performed were songs written by Aisek Hayes and David Porter , for example, “You Do Not Know Like I Know”, “Hold On I'm Coming” (1966), “ Soul Man (1967) and I Thank You (1968). When Stax Records left the Atlantic concern in 1968, the Sam & Dave duo began to experience an artistic and interpersonal crisis. Although the success of the single “Soul Sister, Brown Sugar” in 1969 somewhat overshadowed the prospect of disintegration, the following year, when Sam More began his solo career, the duet ceased its activities [1] .
However, after recording three singles, Sam joined Dave again, and the duo signed to United Artists Records . In the seventies, their artistic activities were constantly complicated by drug dependence and misunderstandings with the law [1] . In 1981, the duo fell apart, and a year later, Dave Preyter created a new group, Sam & Dave, with Sam Daniels .
In 1988, Sam More succeeded with the new version of the song "Soul Man", which he recorded with Lou Reed. [1]
In 1992, the duet was accepted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame [2] . In addition, the song " Soul Man " by Sam and Dave is on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame list 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll [3] . In addition, the single Sam and Dave with the song “Soul Man” (released in 1967 on Stax Records ) was accepted into the Grammy Awards Hall of Fame in 1999 [4] .
