The entertainer

The Entertainer (from the English. - “Zateynik”) - the most famous ragtime by Scott Joplin , written in 1902 (copyrights were registered on December 29, but the work itself is mentioned earlier and, apparently, was already written by September [2] ). The Entertainer has become one of the musical symbols of the era. The American Record Association has included him in the Top Ten " Songs of the Century ."

The notes were released by John Stark & Son in St. Louis . The cover of the minstrel show depicted a dedication to “James Brown and his Mandolin Club” (an arrangement was later issued for mandolin in D major, which is considered difficult for this instrument). In 1903, composer Monroe Rosenfeld called The Entertainer "the best and most melodic" of Joplin's latest works. Music publisher John Stark rated this ragtime on par with Maple Leaf Rag (1899) or even higher [2], which brought Joplin fame.

The Entertainer tune probably lies at the heart of Edgar Settle's XL Rag, published in 2013. John Stark in 1920 released his own processing of the original work of Joplin, turning it into a song Oh You Tommy. Reminiscent of Tom Moore [2] . However, the greatest fame came to the melody in the 1970s. Joplin's ragtime album, released in 1970 and containing, among other tracks, The Entertainer , was the first album from Nonesuch Records to be sold out in a million copies. [3] A few years later, this melody was used as an end-to-end musical leitmotif in the Oscar-winning film " Scam ." The film takes place in the 1930s, despite the fact that in the 1920s. ragtime went out of fashion [4] (so using this melody is an anachronism ). The melody processing performed by Marvin Hamlish in the film reached 3rd place on the Billboard Hot 100 , topped the adult hit parade and brought its creator many prestigious awards. Record World magazine called the unexpected triumph of composition 70 years ago “a phenomenon of the decade” in the field of classical music [5] . It was with him that the revival of interest in the work of Joplin and ragtime of the beginning of the 20th century began.

American ice cream sellers traditionally use The Entertainer to draw attention to their products [6] . Jazz composer and impresario El Rose recalled that already in the 1920s, sellers of watermelon in the streets sang an advertisement of their product to the music of the first measures of The Entertainer [2] .
