Born in the family of a professor of theology, after the death of which his widow with two children moved to Tübingen. Hristmann was educated at a local university, where he initially studied philosophy and theology, but soon became interested in mathematics and in 1799 received a master's degree in mathematics. After completing his theological education and passing the exam, he was appointed a preacher in Pestalozzi, in 1816 he was a preacher in Grubingen, three years later - a preacher and pastor in Heimerdingen. During this period of his life, he wrote several mathematical works and wanted to get, even unpaid, the position of professor of mathematics in Tübingen, but was refused. This event shook his mental health, and in 1826 he left his pastor and retired to Stuttgart, where he spent the last years of his life in poverty and loneliness, avoiding people.
The scientific and literary activity of Christmann was devoted exclusively to mathematics. Major works: “De centro oscillationis per Hugenii regulam analytice investigando tentamen” (Tübingen, 1799; master's thesis); "Ars cossae promota" (Frankfurt, 1814); "Philosophia cossica sive praeparationes ad resolutionem sursolidae" (Stuttgart, 1815); “Cardanus Suevus sive de functionibus cossae resolventibus tractatio” (ibid., 1815); "Aetas argentea cossae" (Tuebingen, 1819); "Appollonius Suevus, sive tactionum problema nunc demum restitutum" (ibid., 1821); “Pythagoras Suevus sive de theoremata Pythagorici ordine altiori” (Stuttgart, 1824); "Cabbala algebraica sive sursolidae aequationis (4-i gradi) et altiorum resolutio algebraica" (ibid., 1827).
