Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau , the total area of the county is 1,165.449 km 2 , of which 1,151.671 km 2 are land and 13.779 km 2 or 1.180% are water bodies.
Population
According to the 2000 census [1] , the district has 17,241 residents comprising 6,415 households and 4,625 families . The population density is 15.00 people per km 2 . There are 7 539 residential buildings in the district, with a building density of about 6.60 buildings per km 2 . Racial composition of the population: white - 96.43%, African - Americans - 2.15%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.25%, Asians - 0.18%, Hawaiians - 0.02%, representatives of other races - 0.23 %, representatives of two or more races - 0.75%. Hispanics accounted for 0.60% of the population, regardless of race .
Out of the total number of households , 30.50% are children under the age of 18, 59.90% of households are married couples living together, 8.30% of households are single women without a spouse, 27.90% of households households are not related to families , 24.10% of households consist of one person, 11.60% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.51 people and the average family size is 2.97 people.
The age structure of the district: 23.90% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44, 25.40% from 45 to 64, and 14.70% from 65 and older. The average age of a resident of the district is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 91.20 males . For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.80 males .
The average household income in the district was 35 724 USD , per family - 40 656 USD . The average male earnings were 32,578 USD against 20,968 USD for a woman . The per capita income was $ 16,986.
