The species is endemic to Colombia , where it is found only in the department of Magdalena. It lives in a tropical mountain rainforest and in rivers in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains at an altitude of 1900 to 2800 meters above sea level [1] .
The species is on the verge of extinction due to a disease such as chytridiomycosis .
