Biography

The exact dates of birth and death are unknown. Born in the first quarter of the XII century in Edessa. Ethnic Assyrian . He worked in hospitals in Cilician Armenia, was a contemporary and associate of Mkhitar Heratsi and Aaron Yedesiatsi . Known for his work "On the structure of man" ( Armenian Յաղագս կազմութեան մարդոյ ), which discusses the issues of anatomy . In addition to an experienced healer, he was famous for his skillful philosopher. He was a close friend of Nerses Schnorali , who often turned to him to resolve disputes. From written sources it is known, for example, that before writing his famous “Elegy for the Capture of Edessa”, Schnorali asked him about the origin of the name of the city. He maintained close contacts with other leading figures of Armenian culture, in particular with Nerses Lambronatsi . It was on the advice of Abu Saeed that the latter wrote the essay "On the names of urban planners." Moreover, among Lambronatsi’s pending works, a book entitled "Anatomy" is indicated, which, according to some researchers, was a translation and the first edition of "On the structure of man."

"On the structure of man"

The book was probably originally written in Syriac [Comm 1] , and already during the author’s life was translated into Armenian. It is saturated with the ideology of ancient scholars such as Hippocrates , Aristotle , Galen , Nemesius , Gregory of Nyssa . Despite the fact that it was a time of rapid prosperity of Arab-Persian medicine, the book does not contain the names of Islamic doctors (even Avicenna ). It is preserved in three editorial versions. The first of these is usually attributed to Nerses Lambronatsi. The second edition is an abridged version entitled "Excerpts from the book of the wise Busaid" On the structure of man "." Probably this edition was also made during the period of the Cilician kingdom, and served as a textbook. For the third time, the work was edited and supplemented in 1625 by the famous physician Asar Sebastatsi . The latter not only corrected errors that later became part of the work, but also added the chapter “On the structure of the eye” from the now lost ophthalmic treatise of Mkhitar Heratsi .

In general, the book summarizes knowledge about the structure of the human body in Cilician Armenia. A study of all three editions made it possible to determine its significance for Armenian and Arab medicine. The Armenian scientist L. Hovhannisyan, specializing in the history of medicine, believes that the work of Abu Said reproduces everything that was known at that time about the structure and functions of the human body.

Comments

  1. ↑ Most sources consider “On the structure of man” a translation from Syriac, but the Syriac text has not been preserved. Prominent historian A. Ter-Ghevondyan I am sure that Abu-Said wrote it in Armenian (See A. Ter-Ghevondian. Arab sources . - Er .: YSU publishing house, 2005. - T. 3. - P. 63. ).
