Praepapilio is an extinct genus of Lepidoptera , belonging to the family Sailboats . Known for the fossilized prints of formations of the Middle Eocene (50.3–46.2 million years ago) [1] from Colorado , USA [2] . The genus is so far the only known representative of the fossil subfamily Praepapilioninae [3] .

The genus was described by Durden and Rose in 1978 and allocated to its own subfamily Praepapilionidae [4] . Only two fossil species are known in the genus, each of which, in turn, is known from only one single specimen. A recent morphological study, however, found a close relationship between the fossil species Praepapilio colorado and the tribe Papilionini in the modern subfamily Papilioninae [5] .
