Story
1938 year. The great-grandson of the famous adventurer Allan Quatermain, James Lee Quatermain, travels with an agent of the US government to Egypt in search of an ancient artifact called "The Heart of Atlantis." However, it turns out that not only they pursue this goal ...
Gameplay
The game consists of four large levels, on each of which the hero's task is to find hidden treasures (although this is not a prerequisite for passing).
Also at the levels you need to solve puzzles. For example, you need to direct the light from the mirrors so that it converges at a certain point; this will allow you to move the plate and open access to the sarcophagus . There are logical elements - for example, you need to use dynamite to blow up a structure blocking the path, or find a lever to activate the elevator.
The game features three types of treasures. Found artifacts allow you to replenish the level of health and stamina. A compass helps to search for treasures, and Alan's notebook helps solve puzzles. Also, the hero can use a flashlight, with which you can overcome the darkened areas of the level and cause damage to some enemies.
The character is opposed by a variety of opponents - in particular, soldiers and monsters. Various weapons are used to destroy them. Enemies can be trapped.
At the beginning of the game, the hero is armed with two FN Auto-5 revolvers and a Thompson machine gun , then it becomes possible to pick up the MP-38 machine gun, grenades and other weapons.
Criticism and reviews
The game was met ambiguously by both critics and players. The main complaints were, in particular, to puzzles, which, despite the rather high complexity, were solved relatively easily due to the presence of a notebook with hints, due to which puzzles “lost their meaning”. On the Metacritic website , the overall rating of the game based on player reviews was 53%.
GameCritics.com reviewers compared the game to the Tomb Raider series . Critics rated the first part of the game more positively than the second, noting the relative simplicity of the puzzles. The presence of monsters (for example, mummies) was met positively, since they "make the gameplay more interesting." Critics also liked the “linearity” of the levels, despite the presence of additional workarounds. At the same time, sound accompaniment (namely sounding of heroes) and game physics received negative reviews [4] .
The information site GameRankings.com , based on reviews of other sites, rated the game 45 points out of 100 [5] .
