Biography

Born with the name Marek Prager on June 7, 1929 in the Polish city of Tarnow . His father was a rabbi and, in the late 1930s, fearing the approaching Nazis , fled to England with his whole family. Already at the age of fifteen, having changed his name to Mickey Duff, the boy began illegally participating in professional boxing matches (he was officially allowed to enter the ring with only sixteen). Within four years of welterweight, he spent a total of 44 fights, of which 33 ended with victory (including 4 ahead of schedule), 8 lost, in 3 cases a draw was recorded.

After completing his career as a professional boxer in 1949, Duff worked as a trader in several places, in particular, he was selling sewing machines in London for some time. However, he soon returned to boxing as a promoter, began to organize boxing matches throughout the UK. Together with promoters Jack Solomons and Harry Levin, as well as manager Jarvis Osteir, he became a key figure in the British boxing industry in the 1960s and 1970s, and has always remained the main partner of the BBC broadcasting fights.

Duff collaborated with many leading British boxers, sixteen world champions passed through it, including such famous masters as Frank Bruno , Joe Calzaghe , John Conte , Terry Downs , Lloyd Hanigan , Maurice Hope , Charlie Magri , Alan Minter , John Strecy , Jim Watt and Howard Winstone . For his outstanding achievements, in 1999 he was introduced to the International Boxing Hall of Fame [1] .

In the 1990s, amid the rise of young promoter Frank Warren , who monopolized broadcasts on ITV and Sky, Duff gradually went into the shadows and soon decided to retire [2] . He worked as a consultant on the film Triumph of the Spirit , which tells the story of a Jewish boxer who ended up in a German concentration camp during the war. In recent years, he suffered from Alzheimer's disease , died for natural reasons on March 22, 2014 in London [3] [4] .
