Biography

Jan de Ban was born February 20, 1633 in Haarlem in the family of a merchant. Father died when Jan was three years old. From 1645 to 1648, de Ban studied with the portologist Jacob Bakker in Amsterdam [2] .

De Ban worked at the court of the English king Charles II during the years of the monarch's stay in Holland. From 1660 [3] until the end of days de Ban lived and worked in The Hague . Being a popular portrait painter, he received orders from the most influential women of the late 17th century .

Note that the trail of stinging criticism, which lasted throughout the artist’s life, had not only envy as a source. Professional gaps such as ignorance of anatomy and the approximate pattern of heads and hands still spoil the impression of his work, although they are partially balanced by their skill in transmitting gold embroidery of dresses and camisoles, in the construction of spectacular multi-tiered “designs” of black and white lace on cuffs and collars portrayed.

Of the many students of Jan de Bann, we mention the English. Jacob de Ban (son of our artist) [4] and English. Johan Vollevens .

Notes

  1. ↑ A number of additional facts from life, as well as the date of the death of Jan de Bahn, are provided by the Oxford Index of Art / “Benezit Dictionary of Artists”. (eng.)
  2. ↑ Jacob Adriaensz Backer (1608–1651), Rembrandt’s peer and rival in Amsterdam, had a powerful pictorial grip and painted numerous custom-made individual and group portraits (including the large-scale group portrait of musketeers Compagnie Kloveniers, 1642). He tried not to contradict the tastes of customers and not to deviate from the generally used canons of secular portraiture developed by the middle of the 17th century.
  3. ↑ Arriving in The Hague, de Ban immediately enters the Guild of St. Luke, uniting local artists.
  4. ↑ Brief biographies of the father and early deceased son are given in the 14th volume of the National Biographical Dictionary, DNB , 1885-1900.
