Biography
He studied at the Riga classical gymnasium , but did not finish the full course, left it, and on September 20, 1817 he entered the service as a clerical servant at the post office in Valka of the Livonia province . On February 4, 1821, he was a teacher of the Russian language and calligraphy at the county school in Valka. Ten years later, on September 16, 1831, he moved to Riga, taking the place of a teacher at a Russian district school. Since August 24, 1837 he was appointed lecturer of the Russian language and translator at the Imperial University of Dorpat . He held this position for more than twenty years and on September 3, 1858, retired due to illness. He spent the last years of his life in Riga.
In addition to teaching, Ivan Pavlovsky had great achievements as a compiler of textbooks and dictionaries of the Russian language. He was a member of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society .
Compositions
The most important achievement of I. Ya. Pavlovsky is his complete German-Russian dictionary, which appeared after eleven years of work in 1856, as well as the Complete Russian-German dictionary (1859). Both were received very positively and were used by translators of old texts as irreplaceable tools. The success of these two dictionaries was confirmed by several reprints of them, both by Pavlovsky himself and Ivan Nikolic, who revised and significantly expanded the 3rd edition of the German-Russian dictionary (1888) and Russian-German (1900); in 1911 the fourth, completely revised edition of the German-Russian dictionary was published.
