Roman Chwalek ( German: Roman Chwalek ; June 24, 1898 , Voinovice - November 27, 1974 , Berlin ) - German trade unionist and politician, member of the SED . Minister of Labor of the GDR in 1950-1953. Minister of Railways of the GDR in 1953-1954.

Biography

The son of a railwayman and the head of a small railway station in Upper Silesia . In 1912-1914, Roman Khvalek studied as a locksmith at a machine-tool plant. In 1915-1918 he participated in the First World War as a soldier, later in the rank of non-commissioned officer. In 1919-1930 he worked as a mechanic at a car repair plant in Oppeln , joined the union and in 1922 was elected chairman of the production council.

In 1918, Roman Hvalek joined the Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany , in 1920 - the Communist Party of Germany . In 1924-1930 he was a deputy in the city council of Oppeln. July 13, 1925 married Martha Wend . In 1930-1933 he was a deputy of the Reichstag . For illegal political activity he was arrested and in 1934 sentenced to three years in prison on charges of high treason. In 1937-1939 he was kept in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp and then until 1945 he worked as a mechanic in the Neukölln district of Berlin .

After the war, he was involved in organizing the Association of Free German Trade Unions in Berlin, became the first chairman of the district board in Berlin, and since 1949 led the IG Eisenbahn . In 1946, Khvalek joined the SED . In 1946-1948 he was a deputy of the city assembly of Greater Berlin and in 1949-1954 - the People’s Chamber of the GDR .

In November 1950, Hvalek was appointed Minister of Labor in the second government of Otto Grotewol . In April 1953, Khvalek was entrusted with the formation of the Ministry of Railways of the GDR, and on May 1, 1953, Khvalek was appointed Minister of Railways of the GDR and worked in this position until November 1954. From November 1954 until his retirement in 1968 he was on the board of the Union of German Consumer Societies, and since 1957 he held the position of First Deputy Chairman of the Union.
