Biography

James Scroham was born in Lexington , Kentucky in 1880. In 1906, he graduated from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Kentucky [1] with a master's degree in mechanical engineering. From 1903 to 1914, Skruham taught at the College of Engineering at the University of Nevada at Reno , and from 1914 to 1917 was the dean of the college [1] [2] .

In 1917, during the First World War , Skruham was enlisted in the US Army with the rank of major, and in 1918 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel [1] [2] .

Scroham came into politics in 1917, becoming an engineer for Nevada. He held this position for six years [1] . In 1919-1923, Skruham was also a member of the State Public Services Commission [2] .

In November 1922, Skruham was elected Governor of Nevada. During his tenure, a bill on old-age pensions was approved, a state park system was developed, and the first airport in Las Vegas was opened [2] . After an unsuccessful attempt to be re-elected for a second term, Scroham in 1927 served as special adviser to the Minister of the Interior on projects for the development of the Colorado River [1] [2] , and in 1927-1932 he was editor and publisher of the Nevada State Journal .

In 1933-1942, Skruham was a member of the House of Representatives, and in 1942-1945 - a US senator [1] [2] [3] .

Skruham died on June 2, 1945, and was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Reno , Nevada. [1] [2]

Skruham was married to Julia McCann. [2] They had two sons: George Thomas Scruham (1906-1907) and James Graves Scruham (1909-1996) [3] .

One of the buildings of the University of Nevada, The James G. Scrugham Engineering & Mines Building , opened in 1963, was named in honor of Skruham.
