Carrel (Moon Crater)

Carrel crater ( lat. Carrel ) is a small impact crater in the central part of the Sea of ​​Tranquility on the visible side of the moon . The name was given in honor of the French surgeon , biologist , pathophysiologist and eugenist Alexis Carrel (1873–1944), approved by the International Astronomical Union in 1979.

Crater MacLire and Ross are the crater's nearest neighbors in the west; the crater Pliny in the northwest; the crater of Jansen in the northeast; Sinas crater in the east-southeast; Crater Wallach to the southeast; the craters of Arago and Lamont in the southwest [1] . The selenographic coordinates of the center of the crater are , diameter - 15.6 km [2] , depth - 2.19 km [3] .

Carrel crater lies on a ridge stretching in the Sea of ​​Tranquility , has a circular shape, broken by a large protrusion in the eastern part, almost not affected by the destruction. A shaft with a sharp edge, the inner slope of the shaft is smooth, with scree rocks at its foot. On the inner slope of the shaft thin vertical light and dark stripes alternate. The height of the shaft above the surrounding terrain reaches 560 m [4] . The bottom of the bowl is crossed.

Before obtaining its own name in 1979, the Carrel crater was called the satellite crater Jansen B.
