He joined the army as a volunteer 14-year-old teenager in 1793. During the years of revolutionary wars, he fought on the Spanish border, in Italy, in Holland and on the Rhine, and was wounded at Biberach. Since 1803 - in the regiment of guards on foot rangers. He participated in the wars of the Empire, was wounded in the leg in the battle with the Austrians at Essling . He fought in Spain, participated in the Russian campaign , in the battles in Saxony in 1813.
Produced in colonels, transferred to the line infantry. The rank of brigadier general received two months after the rank of colonel, for the difference in the battle of Kulm . He was wounded near Dresden and was captured as part of the corps of Marshal Saint-Cyr . After the defeat of Napoleon, he returned with other prisoners to France; he did not receive an appointment from the Bourbons.
During the Hundred Days, he actively supported Napoleon, participated in the suppression of the royalists (supporters of the Bourbons) in the south of the country. In the Belgian campaign, he commanded a brigade of guards light infantry in the formation of General Duem . Participated in the battle of Linyi ; at Waterloo, his regiments showed great tenacity, holding back the Prussian troops of General von Bülow who appeared on the battlefield.
During the second Bourbon Restoration, he was deported to his native Carcassonne. Without permission, he returned to Paris, was arrested and transferred to a military court in Lille, which sentenced him to death for treason against the Bourbons, whom he swore at the first Restoration. The sentence was executed in the moat of the Lille fortress.
General Chartrand was one of the most senior victims of the White Terror - the repressive policies of the Bourbons and their adherents in relation to persons devoted to the emperor Napoleon.
