Schenkel, Daniel

Daniel Schenkel ( German: Daniel Schenkel ; December 21, 1813 , Zurich - May 18, 1885 , Heidelberg ) is a Swiss Protestant theologian, spiritual writer and publisher. He was a member of the Union of German Protestant Churches, had a reputation as a staunch opponent of Catholicism and a supporter of conservative Protestantism, but subsequently began to speak out in favor of dialogue between different churches and the idea that Protestant theology should develop and change.

He received his theological education in Basel and Göttingen, in 1841 he became senior pastor of the cathedral in Schaffhausen, in 1849 he became a professor of theology at the University of Basel , and in 1851 at the University of Heidelberg , where he also became the director of a theological seminar and university preacher. In the academic year 1856/1857 he was the rector of the university. He was considered one of the most influential Protestant theologians of Baden, several times invited to the synods of churches. Died shortly after retirement.

From 1852 to 1859 he was the editor of Allgemeine Kirchenzeitung ; in 1859 he founded the publication Allgemeine Kirchliche Zeitschrif, a literary body of a moderate-minded church movement, and was its editor in chief from 1861 to 1872. Also in 1858-1859 he published in Wiesbaden "Christl. Dogmatik. " One of his main works was a five-volume biblical dictionary, published in Leipzig in 1869-1875, on which Schenkel worked since 1867.

Even during his teaching in Basel, he wrote an essay against D. F. Strauss "Wissenschaft und Kirche". His great work, Das Wesen des Protestantismus (Schaffhausen, 1846-1851; 2nd edition, 1864), written in the spirit of so-called conciliation theology, aimed to prove by historical facts the unity of Protestant fundamental principles and the legitimacy of evangelical unity. literary body of a moderately free-thinking church direction. His essay “Das Charakterbild Jesu” (4th edition - Wiesbaden, 1873), in which, based on the first three gospels, tried to sketch out the purely human image of Christ, provoked strong polemic in theological circles. Since 1863, he worked on the founding of the Protestant ferein, whose main thoughts were outlined in the work "Christentum und Kirche im Einklang mit der Kulturentwicklung" (Wiesbaden, 1867; 2nd edition - 1871). Protestantismus "(ib., 1855); “Die Reformatoren und die Reformation” (Wiesbaden, 1856); “Luther in Worms und in Wittenberg” (Elberfeld, 1870); “Die Gründlehren des Christentums aus dem Bewusstsein des Glaubens im Zusammenhange dargestellt” (Leipzig, 1877); "Das Christbild der Apostel und der nachapostollischen Zeit" (Leipzig, 1879).
