History
When in 221 BC e. the kingdom of Qin for the first time in history united China into a single state, then Sanchuan (三 川 郡) district was created, to which the counties of Xingyang (荥阳 县), Gongxian (巩县) and Jingxian (京 县) were subordinate. Under the Western Han Empire, Sanchuan District was greatly expanded and renamed Henan (河南 郡), and under the Western Jin Empire, Xinyang (荥阳 郡) District was allocated from it, the board of which was located in Xingyang County.
Under the Northern Wei Empire, Xingyang County was subordinate to the Beiyu Province (北 豫州). After Northern Zhou defeated Northern Qi, the Beiyu area was renamed to Xingzhou (荥 州). In 581, North Zhou was renamed Sui, and the Xingzhou region was renamed Zhengzhou (郑州). Under the Song Empire, in 1072, Xingyang County was annexed to Guancheng County (管 城县), but was recreated in 1086.
In 1949, the Zhengzhou Special District (郑州 专区) was formed in eight counties, whose board was located in Xingyang County. In 1954, the board of the special district moved to Kaifeng , and it became known as the Kaifeng Special District (开封 专区). In 1958, Xingyang County was transferred from the Kaifeng Special District to the Zhengzhou City District, and the Shangjie District was allocated from it. In 1961, the county was again returned to the Kaifeng Special District. In 1970, Kaifeng Special District was renamed Kaifeng County (开封 地区). In 1983, Kaifeng County was disbanded, and the county was again transferred to Zhengzhou City District.
In 1994, Xingyang County was transformed into a city county.
