History

The modern temple was built in 1743 on the top of a hill, where earlier in the Middle Ages Moravitsky Castle was located, which originally belonged to the gentry family Toporchikov Emblem Ax . The castle was built in the XI century on top of a hill that dominates the surroundings. Axes lived in the castle until the end of the XIII century. The earliest written evidence of knights living in Moravica is contained in the Vince Sancti Stanislai - Vita maior composition by Vincent from Kelci , which mentions a certain Andrzej from Moravita. Later, Toporchiki sold the castle to Tenchinsky , who lived in it until the first quarter of the XIV century, when they began to build in 1319 in the village of Rudno a new castle . In 1200 a small wooden church was built on the territory of the castle. In the essay "Kodeks dyplomatyczny mogilski" dated 1286, the abbot of this church named Petr (Petrus capellanus de Morawica) is mentioned. The abbots of this church were the chaplains of the Moravice castle. Around 1408, the wooden church was rebuilt into a stone temple. During the construction of this temple was used material obtained from the destruction of part of the castle. The Polish chronicler Jan Dlugosh writes in his essay “Liber beneficiorum dioecesis Cracoviensis” that the church in the Moravice castle was built of “white stone” (ex albo lapide murata) [2] . In the XV century, the owner of the Moravitsky castle was a knight and Krakow khoruziy Gabriel Tenchinsky.

In 1666, one of the sides of the castle was converted into a sacristy for priests. In 1743, the old church was demolished and a modern baroque church of St. Bartholomew was built at its place according to the design of the architect Francesco Placidi. The foundation of the castle is now under the bell tower, which was built in the XVIII century.

To date, underground pedestrian crossings have remained from the destroyed Moravitsky castle, which are located under the sacristy.

On January 22, 1970, the Church of St. Bartholomew was entered in the register of protected monuments of the Małopolska Region (No. A-164 [3] ).
