Biography
He received secondary education in his hometown, graduating from high school in 1810. Then he studied theology, history and philosophy at the University of Leipzig ; in 1813, during the War of Independence in Germany against the Napoleonic troops, he volunteered for the army, commanded a battalion, and in December of the same year was seriously wounded in the battle of Kiel. After recovering, he was rehabilitated, in 1815 received the right to give lectures in Leipzig, in 1817 he moved to Berlin, where he read history and wrote “Geschichte der deutschen Kriegsverfassung” (Berlin, 1819) and “Handbuch der anhalt. Geschichte ”(Dessau, 1820; supplement - Leipzig, 1824).
In 1820, he was appointed professor of history in Breslau, in 1821 he became archivist of the Silesian provincial archive. In 1848-1849 he was a deputy from Neumarkt at the Frankfurt National Assembly , where he was a member of the so-called Kaiser deputation. In 1850-1852 he was a deputy of the second chamber of the Prussian Landtag. In 1832, with the support of the Prussian Ministry of Culture, he founded the Faculty of History in Königsberg, and in 1844 in Breslau. In 1832 he was elected a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, in 1853 - its foreign member.
The main scientific interests of Stenzel were the history of Germany, primarily Prussia and Silesia. The first major work of his authorship was the work "Die Geschichte Deutschlands unter den fränkischen Kaisern" (Leipzig, 1827-1828). For published by Geeren and Ukertom "Geschichte der europ. Staaten ”he wrote“ Geschichte Preussens ”(Hamburg, 1830–37). At the same time, he published with Zschoppe "Urkundensammlung zur Geschichte des Ursprungs der Städte und der Einführung und Verbreitung deutscher Kolonisten und Rechte in Schlesien und der Oberlansitz" (Hamburg, 1832), as well as Grundriss und Literatchetüüße der (Breslavl, 1832). In addition, he edited the publication Scriptores rerum Silesiacarum (Breslavl, 1823–40) and Urkunden zur Geschichte des Bisthums Breslau im Mittelalter (Breslavl, 1845). The second of his main works - "Geschichte Schlesiens" (Breslavl, 1853) - remained unfinished.
He was buried in the church of St. Joseph in Wroclaw .
