He received secondary education at the school of Mary Magdalene in his native city; After graduating from 1849 to 1860 he served in the merchant navy, and in the late 1850s he successfully passed the navigator exam. From 1860 to 1862 he studied mathematics and astronomy in Göttingen and Berlin.
Service
April 19, 1862 he entered the service of the Prussian Navy and soon received an officer rank, and on November 16, 1863 he was awarded the rank of lieutenant tsurzee. In 1864, he participated in the war with Denmark and took part in the battle of Jasmund. In 1866, he fought in the Austro-Prussian-Italian War , commanded the gunboat Tiger and took part in the capture of Emden . In 1867 he received the rank of lieutenant commander and until 1870 he served in the Prussian Naval Ministry.
During the Franco-Prussian War, he was the chief of staff of the squadron of the German Sea, after the war he served as staff officer at Admiral Adalbert. At the beginning of 1872 he participated in the organization of the Imperial Admiralty, and in the autumn of that year he was promoted to corvette captain and was given command of the gunboat Albatroß .
Since 1875, he was a teacher of naval tactics, naval history, maritime organization and maritime signals at the Naval Academy in Kiel. In December 1878 he received the rank of captain zur-see. In the spring of 1811 he completed his teaching career and became director of the military shipyard in Wilhelmshaven. From autumn 1885 to autumn 1886 he was the commander of a training squadron, and then was an inspector of the naval artillery in Wilhelmshaven. On October 18, 1887 he retired, was officially demobilized on December 10, 1889. From 1894 to 1896 he again taught at the Naval Academy.
