Civil War
After the outbreak of war, Klingman was expelled from the Senate. He had no military experience, but was present on the battlefield during the first Bull Run battle as a volunteer adjutant under Joseph Johnston. On August 15, the 25th North Carolina Infantry Regiment was formed in Asheville (North Carolina) and Klingman was elected his colonel. In March 1862, the regiment was included in the Lawrence O'Brien Branch brigade near Klingston. On May 17, 1862, Klingman was awarded the rank of brigadier general and he was appointed commander of the brigade subordinate to General Theophilus Holmes. The main reason for his increase was the transfer of part of the North Carolina brigades to Richmond to counter the advancing Potomac Army. For the defense of the coast, new brigades were formed, which required commanders. [one]
Klingman's brigade consisted of four infantry regiments:
- 8th North Carolina Infantry Regiment (Regiment. Henry Shaw)
- 31st North Carolines Infantry Regiment
- 51st North Carolina Infantry Regiment
- 61st North Carolina Infantry Regiment
