Biography

Since 1904, the Fürnberg family has lived in Vienna . Friedl Fürnberg’s father died at the front during World War I. After graduating from school, Friedl went to study at the technician, but was forced to leave school to help his mother. The October Revolution of 1917 in Russia left a lasting impression on young Fürnberg, and he decided to become a professional revolutionary. After the abdication of the Habsburg dynasty and the proclamation of a republic in Austria in November 1918, Fürnberg joined the Social Democratic Party of Austria , and in March 1919 - the Communist Party of Austria . Since 1920, he participated in the creation of a youth group, since 1921 he was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of Austria , and since 1924 - the Central Committee of the CPA. Since 1922, Fürnberg participated in the work of the Communist International of Youth and in 1928 was elected its secretary.

Friedl Fürnberg became the leader of the Communist Party of Austria in the 1930s after the February battles of 1934 and the Anschluss of Austria in March 1938, when the Austrian Communists, having correctly assessed the political situation, won unprecedented support from the working class for the First Austrian Republic . After the CPA was banned in 1933, Fürnberg was repeatedly arrested and, in 1936, was sentenced to a Wollersdorf camp following a court verdict in a case against socialists. Fürnberg and Franz Honner managed to escape and, by the decision of the party, they left the country, joining a significant part of the CPA leadership, headed by Johann Koplenig .

Members of the CPA Central Committee, gathered around Johann Koplenig and Friedl Furnberg at the Lux Hotel in Moscow, made a significant contribution to the post-war restoration of Austrian independence. Thanks to their influence, the opinion of the leadership of the USSR regarding the Anschluss of Austria underwent dramatic changes. If before the start of World War II, Stalin ranked the Austrians as Germans and justified the Anschluss of Austria with the German national idea, then in December 1941, at a meeting with the British Minister Eden, Stalin raised the question of restoring Austria as an independent state. This goal was also enshrined in the Moscow declaration of the three powers of the anti-Hitler coalition , signed on October 30, 1943, on which the Soviet Union consistently insisted, opposing the plans of Churchill and Roosevelt to turn Austria into a state entity as part of Southern Germany together with Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg . During emigration to Moscow, Friedl Fürnberg, along with other Austrian communists, was engaged in propaganda work on the radio, the production of leaflets, connected activities and political work with Wehrmacht prisoners of war. More active work began in the autumn of 1944, when, after preliminary training, conducted together with responsible Soviet and Yugoslav functionaries and partisans, Tito, Friedl Fürnberg, Franz Honner and some other Austrian communists in the fall of 1944 landed from Soviet aircraft on the liberated territory of Slovenia. Friedl Fürnberg was directly involved in the formation of the first Austrian “battalion of freedom” and participated in the first battles.

After the war he lived in Vienna. He died in April 1978 in Moscow.
