Biography

The second son of Count Frederick XI of Hohenzollern (d. 1401 ) and Countess Adelheida von Furstenberg (d. 1413 ).

In November 1401, after the death of Frederick XI of Hohenzollern, the county was divided between his sons Frederick XII (d. 1443 ) and Eitel Frederick I. The brothers were constantly at enmity with each other because of their paternal inheritance.

In 1418, an imperial court in Rottweil ruled in favor of Eitel Friedrich. Imperial opal was imposed on his brother Frederick. After the elder brother escaped, Eitel Frederick became the sovereign ruler in the county.

In 1422, Eitel Friedrich, with the help of the Swabian city union and county of Württemberg, besieged his brother Friedrich in the castle of Hohenzollern . After a ten-month siege, Frederick XII was forced to surrender. The German emperor Sigismund Luxembourg ordered to destroy the castle and forbade Frederick to restore it. In the same 1423, the county of Zollern passed to the Earl of Württemberg . In 1426, the brothers reconciled and divided their father's lands among themselves. In 1428/1429 , Count Frederick XII was captured by Countess Henrietta von Montbeliard (d. 1444 ). Since that time, his younger brother Eitel Friedrich became the sole ruler of the county. After the death of Count Eithel Friedrich in 1439, his brother Frederick XII, released from captivity in 1440 , returned to the county administration, but died in 1443 .

Marriage and children

In 1432, Eitel Frederick I married Ursula von Rezüns (d. February 17, 1477 ), daughter and heiress of Georg Bruno von Rezüns. Their children:

  • Jobst Nikolaus ( 1433 - February 9, 1488 ), Count of Hohenzollern, married to Countess Agness von Werdenberg-Heilberg from 1448 (1434-1467)
  • Henry (1434/1438 - 1458)
  • Adelheid (d. 8 February 1502), abbess at Oberstenfeld

For the second time, Ursula, the widow of Eithel Friedrich, married Sigmund von Honenberg (d. Before 1440 ). After long hereditary disputes, the counts of the Hohenzollern inherited in 1461 the lands of the Rezüns family (in the canton of Graubünden , Switzerland ).
