Biography
Born in the family of a protodeacon on February 14, 1876 [2] in the village of Berezovka of the Russian Empire, now Perm Territory. He spent his childhood in Birsk , where he graduated from a parish school. Then he studied at the theological school and seminary in Ufa (1896).
He was appointed a member of the Orthodox Spiritual Mission in Japan. As a ship priest was on the armored cruiser " Memory of Azov ". [one]
Having entered the Kazan Theological Academy , Protopopov simultaneously attended classes at the Kazan Art School. He graduated from the Academy in 1900, studied for another three years at an art school.
In 1903 he entered the Higher Art School at the Imperial Academy of Arts (in the landscape workshop of N. N. Dubovsky ). At the same time he was engaged in portraiture in the workshops of P. P. Chistyakov and V. E. Savinsky . Graduated from the Higher Art School in 1912. Received the title of artist (1912) for the painting "After a Stormy Night" [3] .
Nikolai Protopopov played a significant role in the activities of the Arkhip Ivanovich Kuindzhi Society , as a member of his board. [1] He was also an exhibitor of the Spring exhibitions in the halls of the Academy of Arts, exhibitions of the Union of Artists in Moscow in 1909-1911, the Society of Independents in St. Petersburg in 1910-1917 and TPHV [4] . In the spring of 1917 he was secretary of the Union of Plastic Artists in Petrograd. Also exhibited abroad - in Venice and Munich . [five]
From 1919 to 1922, Nikolai Adrianovich headed the VKHUTEMAS division in Ufa , while simultaneously in 1920-1922 he worked as an instructor in the department of museums and preservation of art and antiquities of the Ufa Provincial Department of Education. Since 1922 he taught drawing at the State Art and Industrial College in Petrograd , continued to participate in exhibitions.
He died in 1960 in Leningrad.
Proceedings
Nikolai Protopopov made a number of creative trips around the USSR. Created a portrait gallery of science and culture. He wrote a series of works in besieged Leningrad during the Great Patriotic War . Protopopovβs works are in the collections of many museums in Russia and Ukraine.
As a temple artist, Nikolai Protopopov painted more than 20 temples, in particular, the Cathedral Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God in Dankov and the Intercession Academic Church of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra .
