Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau , the county’s total area is 1,245.791 km 2 , of which 1 142.191 km 2 is land and 103.600 km 2 or 8,300% are water bodies.
Population
According to the 2000 census [1] , 12,597 residents of 5,215 households and 3,765 families live in the okrug. The population density is 11.00 people per km 2 . There are 6 698 residential buildings in the district, with a building density of about 5.80 buildings per km 2 . Racial composition of the population: white - 88.34%, African - Americans - 9.79%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.21%, Asians - 0.25%, Hawaiians - 0.01%, representatives of other races - 0.18 %, representatives of two or more races - 1.22%. Hispanics accounted for 0.90% of the population, regardless of race .
Of the total number of households , 29.10% are children under the age of 18 years, 60.20% of households are couples living together, 8.40% of households are single women without a spouse, 27.80% of households households are not related to families , 25.00% of households consist of one person, 11.60% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.39 people and the average family size is 2.84 people.
The age structure of the district: 22.90% under the age of 18, 6.80% from 18 to 24, 26.70% from 25 to 44, 27.00% from 45 to 64 and 27.00% from 65 and older. The average age of a resident of the district is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 96.90 males . For every 100 females over 18 years of age, there are 94.10 males .
