The 9th Fighter Aviation Regiment was created from October 10 to 20, 1939 in the Trans-Baikal Military District ( Chita ) as part of 4 squadrons on the I-16 , I-153 and I-15bis aircraft [1] .

From June 21, 1941 to July 11, 1941, it was transported by rail to the west. He had 47 I-16s and 89 pilots in combat. Already on July 12, in the city of Kashira (Moscow Military District), it was reorganized according to the state 015/134 and divided into two regiments - the 9th fighter aviation regiment and the 9th "A" fighter aviation regiment [1] .

He entered the military operations against fascist Germany on July 17, 1941 as part of the Air Force of the 21st Army of the Central Front on I-16 aircraft. At the same time, only 1 squadron conducted combat work, the remaining air units were sent to other formations and for retraining, after which they did not return to the regiment. July 25, 1941 won the first known air victory of the regiment in World War II: the I-16 group shot down a German bomber Yu-88 in an air battle near Velikiye Luki . On August 15, along with the 21st Army Air Force, he was transferred to the troops of the newly created Bryansk Front [1] .

In October (10/15/1941) he handed over 6 pilots to the 184th IAP and was withdrawn from the front for additional staffing and retraining. Between 10.26.1941 and 01.20.1942 he was in the 17th reserve fighter aviation regiment of the Ural Military District (Molotov), ​​where he was reorganized according to the state 015/174 and retrained for the English Hurricane fighters [1] .

From March 28 to April 12, 1942 he conducted combat work on Hurricane aircraft as part of the 2nd Assault Air Group of the RSVGK, which was subordinate to the command of the North-Western Front. Departed for manning in the 22nd reserve fighter aviation regiment in Ivanovo, Moscow Military District, where he was from 04/20/1942 to 06/01/1942 [1] .

Since June 1, 1942, the regiment became part of the 2nd Special Operations Air Division of the Air Force of the KA, being engaged in escorting government aircraft, it did not conduct combat operations. On June 20, he was transferred to the 22nd reserve fighter aviation regiment in the city of Ivanovo, Moscow Military District, where he was reorganized according to the state 015/364 and retrained for American fighter aircraft "AeroCobra" [1] .

Since August 12, 1943, the regiment became part of the 304th fighter air division of the 5th Air Army of the Steppe Front. He did not conduct combat work, being in the reserve of the front, he was engaged in the combat training plan. On October 4, as part of the 304th fighter air division, it was included in the 7th fighter air corps of the Supreme Command Headquarters Reserve and began combat operations on Aerocobra aircraft as part of the 5th VA of the Steppe Front (on October 20, 1943 it was renamed the 2nd Ukrainian Front) [1] .

On August 10, 1944, for the distinction in the battles for the seizure of the cities of Przemysl and Yaroslav by order of the Supreme High Command No. 0257, the regiment was given the honorary name "Yaroslavsky" [1] .
