Coaching career
Walter Hollstein began his coaching career in 1927 in the Berlin Tennis-Borussia , for which Sepp Herberger was advocating at that time. Hallstein failed to establish relations with the main “star” of the team, and a year later he was forced to leave the club [1] .
In 1929, Walter moved to the First League of Switzerland to the Nordstern club. The following year, he led the team to the country's top division and managed to gain a foothold for two seasons in the middle of the standings. Then he moved to the Werder Bremen and with him twice in a row in 1936 and 1937 won the Gaulig “Lower Saxony” . In 1936, he was seriously considered as the successor to Otto Nerz as head coach of the German national team , but the German Football Union preferred him to the already mentioned Sepp Herberger [2] .
In 1938, Hollstein joined Osnabruck and twice led the team to the final round of the German championship . After the war, he moved to Frankfurt and worked for 4 years as a sports instructor at a local university. At the same time, he got a head coach at the Frankfurt club. After he also coached the Frankfurt Rödelheim and Eintracht [3] .
In 1950, he again moved to the north of Germany and worked at a sports school in Barsinghausen , and also led the student national team. In 1952, Hollstein again headed Osnabruck , again took part in the final round of the championship of the FRG season 51/52 , but in 1954 he ended his career [4] .
