James Francis "Jimmy" Durante ( born James Francis "Jimmy" Durante , February 10, 1893 - January 29, 1980) is an American singer , pianist , comedian and actor . His rough, harsh voice, New York accent, humor, jazz compositions and a protruding nose made him one of America’s most famous and popular personalities in the years 1920-1970. Early life
James Durante was born in the east of New York. He was the youngest of four children in the family of Rosa Lentino and hairdresser Bartolomeo Durante - both were immigrants from Salerno, Italy . [1] Young Jimmy served as a student in the St. Malach Roman Catholic Church, known as the actor's chapel. [2]
Durante left school after the eighth grade and went to work full time to help his family. He played the piano in the ragtime genre with his cousin, who was also called Jimmy Durante, but was far superior to him. Breaking up with his cousin, James continued to perform in city bars and earned the nickname Regtime Jimmy. Soon he was able to join one of the most famous jazz bands in New York, the Original New Orleans Jazz Band, whose members, excluding him, were from New Orleans . Group numbers were accompanied by Durante's comic acts. In 1920, the group was renamed the Jimmy Durante's Jazz Band.
Radio
On September 10, 1933, Jimmy Durante appeared on the Eddie Cantor radio show on NBC , which was called The Chase and Sanborn Hour . On November 12, Cantor left the show, and Durante soon switched to The Jumbo Fire Chief Program (1935–1936).
Durante, together with Harry Moore, performed at The Durante-Moore Show in 1943, after which his audience increased significantly. The rest of the decade their duet was one of the most beloved in the country, and their joint performance on the Armed Forces Radio Network with Frank Sinatra and our highly regarded collectors of the radio show. Moore left the duo in mid-1947, and from October 1, the program became known as the Jimmy Durante Show. This went on for more than 3 years.
