Biography

Born in 1904 in the village of Ivanitsa (now in the Ichnyansky district of the Chernihiv region of Ukraine).

In 1920, he went to serve in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . He participated in the battles of the Civil War. After her graduation, he continued to serve in the Red Army [1] .

Since the beginning of World War II, Colonel Popov was in the army. Initially, he fought as a commander of the 737th Infantry Regiment of the 206th Infantry Division . For combat distinctions during the battles of August 9-12, 1941 at the villages of Gatnoye and Tereshki, the commander of the 206th Infantry Division, Colonel Sergei Ilyich Gorshkov, introduced Popov to the rank of Hero of the Soviet Union , but the higher command changed the status of the award first to the Order of Lenin, and then to the Order of the Red Banner, which was awarded to him in 1944 [2] [3] .

On September 9, 1941, with the rank of colonel, he was appointed to the post of commander of the newly formed 342nd Rifle Division (later the 121st Guards Rifle Division ). Soon he was awarded the military rank of colonel. At the head of his division, he participated in the battle for Moscow , including battles on the Oka River in December 1941 [1] .

On November 9, 1942, Popov was relieved of his post as commander of the 342nd Rifle Division. June 3, 1944 he was awarded the military rank of Major General.

After the war, Popov continued to serve in the Soviet army. After discharge to the reserve, he lived in Kiev .

He died in 1979, was buried at the Lukyanovsky military cemetery in Kiev.

He was awarded the Order of Lenin (02/21/1945 [4] ) and four orders of the Red Banner (01/30/1943, 08/14/1944, 11/03/1944 [4] , 1950 [4] ) with a number of medals [1] .
