Biography
Born on January 3, 1892 in the city of Wendam in the north of the Netherlands. He studied at the University of Utrecht , in 1919 received a doctorate in philosophy, defending a thesis on the Verbenov family . In the same year he went to the Dutch East Indies . Until 1932 he worked as an assistant in the herbarium of Beitensorg . In 1932-1933, Lam headed the Beitensorg Foreign Laboratory, and was also an extraordinary professor at the Batavian Medical School.
Upon returning to the Netherlands in 1933, Hermann Lam became director of the Royal Herbarium ( National Herbarium of the Netherlands ) of the University of Leiden , as well as an extraordinary professor in Leiden. Since 1954, he was a full professor.
In 1954, Lam traveled to New Guinea , visited Australia . In Perth, he received an honorary doctorate. In the summer of 1962, Kelantan visited the Limestone Expedition of UNESCO.
In 1962, Hermann Johannes Lam retired. He died on February 15, 1977 . The main parts of the herbarium are stored in Bogor (BO) and Leiden (L).
