Cylindraspis

Cylindraspis (lat.) Is a genus of recently extinct giant land turtles. All species lived on the Mascarene Islands ( Mauritius , Rodriguez and Reunion ) in the Indian Ocean. Extinct due to hunting and the introduction of invasive predators.

Modern mtDNA studies of bone remains have shown that all species of the genus are descended from a single ancestor that came to Mauritius from Madagascar millions of years ago.

These giant turtles were large and slow, so they became easy prey for humans. They were finally exterminated in the XVIII — XIX centuries.
