Biography

Otto Erich Deutsch was born in Vienna in the family of a Jewish manufacturer Ignaz Deutsch and his wife Ernestina (nee Gevich). In 1903-1907 he studied the history of literature and arts at the University of Vienna and in Graz , in 1909-1910 again in Vienna [1] .

During the First World War, Deutsch was in military service for three years. After the death of his father, he invested his inheritance in a bookstore and founded a publishing house, but both of his enterprises fell victim to the post-war crisis [1] .

In the postwar years, the scientific interests of Otto Deutsch were finally determined - he devoted himself to the history of music; in 1928 received the title of professor [1] . Engaged in scientific research, at that time mainly devoted to Franz Schubert , he appeared in the Vienna press as a music critic and feuilletonist [1] .

In 1938, after the Anschluss , Deutsch had to leave his homeland - to emigrate first to England , then to the United States . After the end of World War II, he worked for a long time in Cambridge before returning to Vienna in 1952 [1] .

He died in Baden , near Vienna, and was buried in the Central Cemetery of the Austrian capital [1] .

Scientific activity

Otto Deutsch's scientific interests were mainly Austrian music of the second half of the 18th - the first half of the 19th century ( J. Haydn , V. A. Mozart , L. van Beethoven , F. Schubert), as well as the life and work of G. F. Handel [1 ] . With the name Deutsch is the heyday of documentary in mozart studies in the 50-70 years of the XX century [2] . His monographs are published in many languages; scientific recognition was expressed, in particular, in the award (in 1959) of the Austrian honorary badge “For Science and Art”, the awarding of an honorary doctorate in philosophy from the University of Tübingen ; Mozart’s biography written by Deutsch was awarded the Mozart Society Medal in Vienna [1] [3] .
