Tavis Smiley (born September 13, 1964) is an American talk show host, author, political commentator, entrepreneur, lawyer, and philanthropist. [1] [2]

Smiley was born in Gulfport to the lonely Joyce Mary Roberts, and grew up in Bunker Hill ( Indiana ). On his second birthday, September 13, 1966, his mother married U.S. Air Force non-commissioned officer Emory Garnell Smiley. [3]
In the 1980s, after graduating from the university, Tabis worked as an assistant to Tom Bradley , mayor of Los Angeles . In 1991, Smiley became a radio commentator, and in 1996 began conducting a BET Talk talk show (later renamed BET Tonight) on BET . After Tavis Smiley sold an exclusive interview with Sarah Jane Olson to the ABC channel news in 2001, BET refused to renew the contract with him. After that, Smiley organized his own show - The Tavis Smiley Show - on NPR (2002-2004) and currently hosts Tavis Smiley shows on PBS and the Tavis Smiley Show on PRI on weekdays. From 2010 to 2013, Smiley and Cornell West joined forces and hosted their own Smiley & West talk show. Together they interviewed musician Bill Withers in a 2009 documentary.
