Biography
Born November 27, 1911 in a Jewish family.
He graduated from Washington University , then studied law at St. Louis University School of Law . In 1940, Merrick left his legal career to become a successful theater director. In 1950, he became a member of The Lambs (New York), one of America's oldest theater organizations.
David Merrick was known for his love of PR promotions. So in 1961 he released on the Broadway the musical , which received not the most flattering reviews, which prompted Merrick to a rather ingenious advertising move. He found the namesake of the city’s seven most influential theater critics (Howard Taubman, Walter Kerr, John Chapman, John MacLane, Richard Watts, Norman Neidel and Robert Coleman) in the New York phone book, invited them to the musical and secured the right to use them photos and reviews [1] . Then Merrick advertised in newspapers, in which the names of “critics” and their “professional reviews” were, of course, positive. Although his announcement was published in only one issue of The New York Herald Tribune , the effect of such an action was enough to continue showing the musical for another nearly six months (205 performances).
Merrick suffered a stroke in 1983, after which his speech was impaired, and he spent most of his time in a stroller . In 1998, he founded a foundation of his own name - the David Merrick Arts Foundation - to support and develop American musicals.
He died on April 25, 2000 . He was buried in the Pinelawn Memorial Park of Farmingdale , New York , USA [2] .
In 2001, he was included in the St. Louis Walk of Fame [3] .
