Biography
The third son of Prince Friedrich Hohenzollern (1891-1965), the head of the house of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (1927-1965), and Princess Margarita Karola of Saxony (1900-1962).
Johann Georg, known as the “Gansi”, had three brothers ( Friedrich Wilhelm , Franz Josef and Ferfried) and three sisters (Benedict, Maria Aldengund and Maria Teresa).
Marriage
In 1959, Johann Georg met Princess Birgitta of Sweden (born January 19, 1937 ), the sister of the current King Charles XVI Gustav, at a party of his friends and relatives in Germany. Birgitta was the second daughter of Gustav Adolf, Duke of Westerbotten and Sibyl Saxe-Coburg-Gotha .
On December 15, 1960, their engagement was announced at the Royal Palace of Stockholm . A civil marriage ceremony took place in the Royal Palace of Stockholm on May 25, 1961 , and church marriage took place in the Church of St. Johann in the Sigmaringen Palace on May 30, 1961 .
In 1990, the couple began to live separately, but the marriage was not officially divorced. Together they participated in all the important events of the Swedish royal family, including in 2010 attended the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria . In 2011, Johann Georg and Birgitta celebrated a golden wedding.

- Prince Karl Christian Hohenzollern (born April 5, 1962 , Munich ) has been married since 1999 to Nicole Helen Nestich (born January 22, 1968 ), they have one son
- Princess Desire Hohenzollern (born November 27, 1963 , Munich ), in her first marriage since 1990 (divorce in 2002 ) to Heinrich Georg Franz (born 1956 ), Count Ortenburg (three children), in the second in 2004 to Ekbert Bolen und Halbach (born 1956 )
- Prince Hubertus Hohenzollern (born June 10, 1966 , Munich ), married since 2000 to Maria Uta Koenig (born February 25, 1964 ), from whom he has a son and daughter
Education and career
In 1955 - 1964 he studied art history and classical archeology at the universities of Paris , Freiburg im Breisgau and Munich . Since 1966, the prince worked in the Bavarian state collections of paintings . At first he was a specialist in Spanish and French painting, and later became deputy general director.
Johann Georg was an art historian by profession and lived in Grunwald, a district of Munich .
Since 1986, Johann Georg Hohenzollern has been Director General of the Bavarian National Museum . During his leadership, the museum abandoned various large-scale projects, as well as the acquisition of a collection of works of art by Fritz Thyssen .
From 1992 to 1998, he worked as the general director of the Bavarian State Art Collection and was also the director of the Hypo-Kunsthalle at the Hypo Cultural Foundation.
He was a member of the Advisory Council of Europe at Christie's International plc.
In 1964, he defended his doctoral dissertation in French Gothic.
