Yuri G. Bilstin (actually Bildstein , in some cases signed as Yuri Van Oren ; English Yuri Bilstin ; February 10, 1887 , Odessa - December 15, 1947 , New York ) - Russian, French and American cellist and teacher.
He graduated from the Tiflis Conservatory (1904), then trained in the Brussels and St. Petersburg Conservatoires. In 1908-1909 taught in Tiflis, then in 1909-1917. in St. Petersburg , during the Petersburg period he performed a lot of concerts [1] . In the first post-revolutionary years he lived and worked in Samara , gave concerts [2] .
In 1922 he emigrated to France. Here he opened the Psychophysiological Institute of Music Education, published the methodological manual “Psychophysiological Method of Music Education” ( Fr. Méthode psycho-physiologique d'enseignement musical ; 1927), which used the pedagogical ideas of Jacques-Dalcroze and caused a certain resonance. It is reported that Bilstin’s pedagogical ideas influenced the major French music teacher Pierre Sankan [3] , and Bilstin’s practice of active relaxation had a great influence on Maurice Marteno [4] .
In 1932 he moved to the United States. He played as part of the piano trio of Karl Tollefsen , for various occasions he also performed as a soloist (for example, his solo program, consisting of his own adaptations of Caucasian and Iranian songs, is known). He gave lectures on ancient music and ancient musical instruments. He opened his own music school in New York. The student of Bilstin was, in particular, the famous avant-garde dancer Sybil Shearer [5] .
Bilstin’s composer's heritage includes, in particular, “Orphic hymns” for three voices with an orchestra (1931), a trio for viola da gamba, flute and piano “ Invocation to the Light ” ( Eng. Invocation to the Light ; 1932) and others.
