Biography
William Blackley was born in November 1875 in the city of Tenterfield in New South Wales . From childhood he was interested in the study of botany, since 1898 he worked in the administration of the Jenolan Cave and began to study the flora of its surroundings. In 1900, Joseph Maiden invited him to work in the Sydney Botanical Garden . Until 1912, Blackley was a gardener in Sydney.
In 1913, Blackley became an assistant in botany at the National Herbarium of Australia, and worked there until his death. Until 1925, he and Maiden worked on the compilation of a monograph of eucalyptus ; after Maiden's death, he continued writing it with Richard Cambridge . Cambridge died in 1928, Blackley had to complete the book on his own.
Blackley became a leading specialist in eucalyptus, at his own expense issued a key to determine their species. From 1922 to 1928, he published a series of articles revising the taxonomy of the family Remnetsvetnikovye .
In 1940, Blackley became the honorary keeper of the New South Wales eucalyptus collection. He died on September 1, 1941 .
