The web portal provides users with daily news in the field of free software , Linux , BSD and UNIX-like operating systems , as well as in the field of computer technology .
All information provided on the site is designed for a wide range of users - both for highly qualified specialists and for lovers of free open source software .
Also available on the site are ready-made articles and tips written by experts in the field of IT , OpenWiki - the OpenNET knowledge base, an interactive system for viewing system manuals, popular distributions of free operating systems / programs and other documentation. The web portal supports easy search and RSS feeds.
The site has a forum for administrators and users, which is divided into numerous branches, including topics on programming , games , network administration, security, optimization , modding the hardware and software of a computer, and many others.
History
The site was created in the fall of 1996 as a home page on which a selection of accumulated links and materials on Linux, Unix and open technologies was published, collected as a result of reading fido-conferences, such as RU.LINUX and RU.UNIX [3] . In 1998, the project moved to a separate opennet.ru domain and was supplemented by a news section and a forum. In 1999, a heading for keywords appeared on the site [4] , which became one of the first implementations of methods for categorizing information by tags in Runet.
In 2001, the site became the winner [5] of the Golden Site contest in the nomination “Reference and Information Site” (Ural Federal District). Over the past 10 years, the work of the OpenNET.ru site has been focused on covering news related to free software and open technologies, as well as on coordinating the work of the formed community.
Interesting Facts
- The site continues to provide the opportunity to publish anonymous comments, despite attempts [6] to ban anonymous participants. Violations by anonymous visitors are suppressed by a rather strict moderation, as well as a filter system.
- The conspiracy theories of “corporations against free software” are popular on OpenNET: in particular, there is an article on OpenNETWiki [7] that describes Microsoft’s attempts to “ tarnish free software with the help of fragile student minds,” supposedly offering students special “training manuals” for libel and trolling for free software, its developers and ideologists, and as a fee - "bonus licenses for software and tickets to conferences."
Alexa Internet
- According to Alexa.com statistics on October 5, 2010 , the OpenNET site is at 450th place in terms of attendance in Russia and 317 in Ukraine [8] .
