It was established by King Kalakaua on September 28, 1875 [1] in memory of his election to the Hawaiian throne on February 12, 1874. I was awarded for outstanding services to the state and the king.

The order consisted of four degrees with a limited number of simultaneously members of the order [2] :

  • Knight Grand Cross - 12 people,
  • great officer - 20 people
  • commander - 30 people
  • cavalier (companion) - 60 people.

As the highest degree of distinction, an order chain could be awarded to heads of state.

Upon admission to the order, Hawaiian cavaliers had to pay a fee: Grand Cross cavalry - $ 150, great officers - $ 125, commanders - $ 100, gentlemen - $ 50. Foreigners were exempted from payments.

A known number of awards - 255 people:

  • Grand Knights with a chain - 1 person ( Prince of Wales ),
  • Knights of the Grand Cross - 37 people,
  • great officers - 49 people
  • commanders - 95 people (1 award was canceled on September 11, 1885),
  • gentlemen - 73 people.

King Kalakaua himself on the day of the establishment of the order laid upon himself the signs of the Great Cross with a chain.

Hawaiian queens and princesses of royal blood had the right to wear the signs of the Grand Cross of the Order, but were not considered members of the Order.

Every year on February 12, the Grand Council of the Order from all the cash on the island of Hawaii of the members of the Order convened to resolve the affairs of the case and discuss new candidates. Those who missed the meeting without good reason were awarded a fine of $ 20.

After the overthrow of the monarchy in January 1893, all royal awards were abolished.

Signs of the Order

The chain is golden, consisting of alternating links of two types: monograms of King Kalakaua (double letter “K” and Roman numeral “I”) and cahili [3] of dark red and yellow enamel. The links are connected by golden rings and closed by the central link in the form of a monogram of King Kalakaua, enclosed in a laurel wreath. The sign of the Big Cross is suspended from the center link.

The sign is the Maltese cross of blue enamel with a wide rim of white enamel. In the corners of the cross there are golden laurel branches forming a wreath, and golden pulow low emanating from the center of the cross [4] . In the center of the front side of the cross there is a round medallion of blue enamel with a wide rim of white enamel. In the center of the medallion is a golden Kahili [3] of dark red and yellow enamel. On the rim there are gold inscriptions “KALAKAUA” at the top and “FEBRUARY 12TH 1874” at the bottom, separated by two asterisks. On the back of the cross there is the same medallion, with the date in the center - “1874”, on the rim - the inscription “KEOLA” in the upper part and two laurel branches at the bottom, separated from the inscription by two asterisks.

The cross is crowned with a royal crown, which has in the upper part an eyelet with a ring through which the order ribbon is passed. The signs of the gentlemen are silver, the remaining degrees are gold.

The star of the Big Cross is a silver eight-pointed. A large cross is placed on the center of the star.

The star of the great officer - since 1879, the same as for the Big Cross. Until 1879, an order cross with a medallion on the back was placed in the center of the star.

The ribbon of the Big Cross is silk moire blue.

The tape of the younger degrees is a blue silk moire with narrow white stripes at the edges and three white stripes at an equal distance from each other and the edges.

Grand Cavaliers wore the badge of the order on a wide ribbon over the right shoulder and a star on the left side of the chest, great officers only a star on the left side of the chest, commanders - the badge of the order on a narrow ribbon on the neck, cavaliers - the badge of the order of small size on a narrow ribbon on the left side of the chest.
