The Royal Order of Kamehameha I ( gav. Kamehameha I e Hookanaka ) is the highest state award of the Kingdom of Hawaii .

Content
History
Established April 11, 1865 by King Kamehameha V [1] . Named after King Kamehameha I , the founder of the kingdom. Awarded for exceptional services to the state and the king.
According to the British model , members of the order had the right to use the postnominal. The Order consisted of three degrees with a limited number of simultaneously consisting in the Order [2] :
- Cavaliers of the Big Cross ( KGCK ) - 10 people,
- Cavaliers Commander ( KCK ) - 30 people,
- Cavaliers ( CK ) - 50 people.
As the highest degree of difference heads of state could be awarded the Order chain.
When making the order, the Hawaiian gentlemen had to pay a fee: the Grand Cross gentlemen - $ 250, the commander's gentlemen - $ 150, the gentlemen - $ 75. Foreigners were exempted from payments.
Known number of awards - 139 people:
- Knights of the Grand Cross with a chain - 2 people (Queen Victoria and Emperor Mutsuhito ),
- holders of the Big Cross - 38 people,
- cavalier commanders - 56 people
- Cavaliers - 43 people.
57 times the order vouched Kamehameha V and 82 times - the king of Kalakaua .
The Hawaiian queens and royal blood princesses had the right to wear the signs of the Grand Cross of the order, but they were not considered members of the order.
Every year, the Grand Council of the order of all members of the order on the island of Hawaii gathered to decide orders of the order and discuss new candidates. Those who missed the meeting without good reason were awarded a $ 20 fine.
Not awarded since 1886. After the overthrow of the monarchy in January 1893, all royal awards were abolished.
Insignia of the Order
The chain is gold, consisting of alternating links of three types: the monogram of King Kamehameha (the letter “K”), the royal crown and the order cross of white and blue enamel. The links are connected by golden rings and are closed by a central link in the form of a large monogram of King Kamehameha, enclosed in a palm wreath of green enamel, tied at the bottom with a gold ribbon. The sign of the Big Cross is suspended to the central link.
The sign is a Maltese cross of white enamel with fines in the corners. In the center of the front of the cross there is a round medallion of white enamel with a wide rim of blue enamel. In the center of the medallion is the golden monogram of King Kamehameha - the openwork letter “K”. On the rim is a gold inscription “KAMEHAMEHA I” in the upper part and two laurel branches below. On the back of the cross is the same medallion, with no images in the center and with an inscription on its rim - “E HOOKANAKA”.
The cross is crowned with a royal crown, which has an eyelet at the top with a ring through which the ribbon is passed. Signs of gentlemen - silver, other degrees - gold.
Star - silver eight-pointed. On the center of the star superimposed order cross large.
The ribbon of the Big Cross is red silk moire with narrow white stripes along the edges.
The ribbon of lower degrees is red silk moire with narrow white stripes along the edges and three white stripes at equal distances from each other and the edges.
In special cases, signs of the Big Cross, decorated with diamonds, could be awarded.
Holders of the Big Cross wore a badge of the Order on a wide ribbon over the right shoulder and a star on the left side of the chest, cavaliers commanders - a badge of the Order on a narrow ribbon on the neck, gentlemen - a sign of the Order of small size on a narrow ribbon on the left side of the chest.
